Route1 legal recruitment app gains traction in Australian market

Sydney, 1 December 2016 – The strong growth of Route1’s new legal recruitment app could be a game changer in the Australian legal market.  Less than two months since Route1 debuted in Australia, over 1,500 lawyers have downloaded the app and it boasts direct job postings from the country’s leading law firms – including Ashurst, Clayton Utz, Corrs, Gilbert & Tobin, Johnson Winter Slattery Herbert Smith Freehills, Norton Rose, Squire Patton Boggs, Sparke Helmore and Thomson Geer – and many others.

As Uber and AirBnB have done in their markets, Route1 hopes its disruptive tech product solves market inefficiencies within legal recruitment.  Route1’s marketplace provides candidates and employers with benefits that traditional recruitment can’t – transparency, low cost, efficiency and targeted matching. In recognition for its efforts, Route1 was recently awarded the Thomson-Reuters/LegalGeek LawTech award for best marketplace in the UK, where the tech startup first launched.

Paul Simos, GM of Route1 Australia, is confident about Route1’s future in the Australian market. He commented: “Employers want to reduce their recruitment costs given the high turnover of legal staff. But finding quality legal talent is not easy. Online job sites, Linkedin and recruitment agencies have their limits and can be expensive. Route1 sources lawyers using a targeted, efficient, low cost approach.”

Transparency is also key to Route1’s appeal.  All jobs on Route1 are posted by employers – a refreshing change over online job sites that are dominated by ads from recruitment agencies. Posted jobs are immediately delivered into the hands of active or passive candidates who have created an anonymous profile. Employers no longer need to wait for prospects to “search” for their job or for recruiters to “find” them a candidate. Candidates can also avoid an unnecessary middle step of meeting with recruiters.

This direct access is especially useful given Route1’s broad reach to international candidates seeking jobs in Australia from overseas. The Route1 app is now available in New Zealand, South Africa, the UK as well as Australia.

Sydney Office Managing Partner of Squire Patton Boggs, Campbell Davidson, commented: “Innovation and change is a reality in the legal sector today and we are happy to support unique new offerings like Route1 that have the promise to deliver excellent results.”

It is Route1’s low cost that has captured the interest of employers. They can sign up and start posting jobs for free at www.route1.co and lawyers can get the app for free in the App store or Google Play. With the fee to employers set at just 5% of first year’s salary for successful hires it’s over 75% less than the cost of average recruitment agency fees.

Peter Nankivell, former Chairman of Herbert Geer in Melbourne sees the value proposition as compelling: “After almost 30 years in law firms as an Associate, Partner and most recently Chairman of Partners, it is very clear to me that access to talented lawyers in an efficient, transparent and cost effective manner is an absolute essential to a modern legal practice. Route1 provides a solution that is far superior to traditional legal recruitment models for both the firm and the candidate.”

Route1’s appeal to the millennial generation is undeniable – a candidate for a Property Associate role in Sydney recently commented: “I found the Route1 app to be extremely useful and I will definitely recommend it to my friends and colleagues without hesitation.”  And Ben Prebble, who was the first person hired through Route1 after it launched in the UK, is a fan: “For lawyers it really works. Five minutes from download to applying for a job.  I was pleasantly surprised by the firms on the app. There were many more than I expected, one of which I ended up accepting an offer from, which I’m very happy about.”

In terms of growth, Route1 is looking to the in-house and government sectors – where there are hundreds of open roles but employers can’t easily access the talent they want.
